Savory Scones to Compliment Your Low or High Tea
Savory Scones are scones with herbs and/or spices in them instead of sugar and fruits. They tempt the tummy and tantalize the taste buds. There are many to choose from and so many combinations of seasonings the possibilities are endless. These seasoned savory scones are the perfect compliment to any fish or meat dish you may choose to serve.
Garlic Cheddar Cheese Scones Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease 12 cup muffin pan. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour with baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender or knives until it looks like fine crumbs, then add the cheese, sour cream, and herbs. Stir just until blended. Spoon the dough into the muffin cups. Bake for 20 minutes, or until lightly browned. Melt some extra butter (about 2 TBS) and add some garlic if you want even more zip. Brush the hot scones with the garlic butter. (If you think the scones are garlicky enough, just brush with butter). Serve warm.Makes 12 scones.
Herbed Scones Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine in a large bowl, flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter. Add parsley, basil and rosemary and mix together. Stir in tomatoes and cheese. Beat eggs with half-and-half and add all at once to flour mixture. Stir with a fork until it sticks together. Place on a floured surface and knead about 5 times. Pat dough into a circle about 10 inches. Cut into 8 wedges. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve warm.
